Miss Gibraltar crowned Miss World 2009
JOHANNESBURG: Miss Gibraltar Kaiane Aldorino has been named winner of the 2009 Miss World pageant in Johannesburg. Kaiane had also won the swimsuit round and was a favourite of the judges.
Miss Mexico, Perla Beltran Acosta, was the first runner up followed by Miss South Africa, Tatum Keshwar. Apparently, Miss South Africa was the hot favourite to win the crown.
Ex-Miss World and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra was one of the judges at the event. The coveted beauty pageant is in its 59th year presently and has received participation of ladies from 112 different nations round the globe.
India’s Pooja Chopra failed to make it to the final round of seven competitors, dashing the hopes of many an Indian of getting the title back to the country.
Pooja had earlier made it to the semifinal round of 16 competitors on the basis of her Beauty With Purpose project on saving the girl child.
India has not won the title since 2000 when Priyanka Chopra brought the crown home.
Apart from her, India boasts of Miss Worlds like Reita Faria (1966), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (1994), Diana Hayden (1997) and Yukta Mookhey (1999).
