Suicide blast kills eight in Pakistan
PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber blew himself up outside the house of a senior police official in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing at least eight people and wounding 25, officials said.
The blast happened in the town of Mardan, which is on the route between the major city of Peshawar and the troubled Swat Valley, where Pakistani troops are currently battling Islamist militants.
“It was a suicide attack. The man was on foot and when he was stopped by police he blew himself up in front of the house of the deputy inspector general in Mardan,” local police officer Iqbal Khan told AFP.
Local mayor Himayatullah Mayar said eight people were killed in the blast and 25 were wounded. Police said at least three policemen were killed in the attack.
Pakistan has been hit by a wave of suicide bombings in the past year blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants based in the country’s troubled frontier tribal regions. -AFP
